Spectator-Friendly Venue Offers Greater Access to Top Players

DANA POINT, CALIF. (July 10, 2001) --- The Hyundai Team Matches, one of the country's premiere season-ending professional golf tournaments featuring the world's top players from all three tours, playing in a team match play format, will move from Newport Coast to Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, Calif. according to Terry Jastrow, president of Gaylord Event Television, producer of the event. The tournament will be played Dec. 7 - 9 and will air live on ABC Sports.

"Monarch Beach Golf Links is the perfect location for this compelling golf event," said Jastrow. "The venue is spectator-friendly which means fans can easily follow their favorite players and will provide an excellent back drop for both the spirited competition and the spectacular television pictures. We are thrilled about the new partnership with the new St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa and together with Hyundai Motor America, the combination we are sure will bring about a highly successful event."

Set in spectacular Dana Point and adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, the newly refurbished 18-hole Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed golf course is part of the new St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa that is set to open in July 2001. It is poised to redefine the ultimate luxury resort experience in Southern California with a five-star, 400-room property being developed by Newport Beach-based Makar Properties as well as adjacent high-end luxury residential units.

"We're thrilled that a tournament as prestigious as the Hyundai Team Matches has chosen to relocate to Monarch Beach Golf Links," said Paul Makarechian, CEO of Makar Properties. "To us, this is another testament to the overall appeal not only of the golf course, but also the resort and surrounding community."

Makar Properties acquired the Monarch Beach Golf Links as part of the purchase of a 225-acre resort and master plan parcel, which feature unparalleled oceanfront views. The firm has since undertaken an extensive upgrade and renovation of the overall course, highlighting the ocean holes and redesigning the already-challenging layout.

The freshly renovated golf course serves as the central attraction to the new $240 million Tuscan-inspired resort. Among the improvements are renovated bunkers and a more manicured look on the lakes. The project also addresses maintenance issues through new and improved irrigation hardware around the greens, resulting in improved putting surfaces, and drainage improvements throughout the course. The course is also playing 300 yards longer with 11 of the 18 holes having been lengthened.

"Hyundai Motor America is pleased to continue its support for such an outstanding tournament for the second year in a row and we are thrilled that the tournament will be held at Monarch Beach Golf Links," said Dave Weber, vice president of marketing for Hyundai. "The sport of golf increasingly fits our marketing needs as Hyundai's customer base expands and grows."

A total of 24 players comprised of four two-person teams from each tour (Senior PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR and LPGA) determine the field and compete for the prize package of $1.2 million. Last year, the teams of Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, Tom Lehman and Duffy Waldorf and Dottie Pepper and Juli Inkster, won in their respective tour divisions. The two winners from Saturday's competition in each tour division advance to the finals on Sunday with the chance to earn the Hyundai Team Matches championship for their respective tour division. The two losing teams also will compete on Sunday in a consolation round.
