The Poplar Grove Golf Club Respects Tradition and Natural Beauty in Amherst County, Virginia

Scottsdale, Ariz. - Joining with new partners, Poplar Grove Associates, Ltd., in Amherst County, Va., Troon Golf,® the world leader in upscale golf course management, development, and marketing, will manage operations for the Poplar Grove Golf Club. Set on a historic country estate dating back to pre-Revolutionary America, the golf course is the collaboration of Senior Architect, Ed Carton of Golf Design Studio, Inc., and the final design of legendary golfer, Sam Snead.

"We take great pleasure in providing the TROON GOLF EXPERIENCEsm with the vision, beauty and history to be enjoyed at the Poplar Grove Golf Club," stated Troon Golf Executive Vice President, Acquisition & Development, Tim Schantz. "The traditional historic nature of the property, combined with timeless traditions and contemporary services will provide a premier golf club atmosphere."

As the focal point of the surrounding gated residential enclaves, the Poplar Grove Golf Club occupies the manor house and log cabin from the Higginbotham Farm originally established in 1773. Only the sixth owners of this notable estate, Johnny Maddox and David Smith purchased the property seven years ago with the vision of a 1000-acre residential development and golf course that would respect the history and natural beauty of this area near Lynchburg.

The renovated structures preserve the heritage and now house the restaurant and golf shop until the permanent clubhouse is constructed. The stunning golf course is set on 230 acres and weaves through a forest of poplar, maple, and oak trees. Immaculate natural stone masonry by the Native American Monican Indians is a strong accent to the property's Colonial look and feel.

In what was one of his last projects at the age of 87, Sam Snead made three visits to the site during construction to lend his experience and ensure a championship-designed golf course. Snead captures the historic beauty of its natural setting with minimal uphill shots and hidden bunkers.

"The Poplar Grove Golf Club certainly respects Sam's wishes," said Maddox. "Above all, Mr. Snead wanted a golf course of championship caliber that the average golfer can enjoy. The outstanding course maintenance and playing conditions that Troon Golf provides will easily position the course among the best in the state."

Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, Troon Golf manages operations at more than 140 courses located in 23 states and 12 countries. Additionally, 28 Troon Golf facilities enjoy a Top 100 ranking by national or international publications.
