A Breath Of Fresh Air: A New Day At Alpine Country Club

Everyone was pretty happy at Alpine Country Club in Cranston, Rhode Island, on a Wednesday in late May. The new food and beverage manager was looking forward to having draft beer taps installed at the club, a final touch to their recent renovation.

The golf shop was filled with merchandise and energetic golf professionals. General Manager Jeff Beier was pleased that the renovations and new systems put into place since Troon Privé began managing the club in May 2014 were clearly having a beneficial effect on the membership and in recruiting new members. And numerous golfers were about to enjoy the 1962 Geoffrey Cornish design.

Cornish, the late grand old man of New England golf design, was engaged to lay out a course on a 210-acre plot of land that the Cranston Alpine Club has purchased in 1960 for $50,000. The story goes that members of an Italian-American social organization were refused membership at another local golf club and so resolved to build their own.
