Arizona State Completes Comeback, Wins Inaugural Copper Cup

In-state rivals, Arizona and Arizona State Men’s golf, squared off for an exciting two-day Ryder Cup-style challenge called the Copper Cup from Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, AZ.

The University of Arizona had the lead over Arizona State for much of the event until the very end of the challenge that saw a remarkable last three holes by ASU’s David Puig Corrius to give the two point advantage for the fourth and final session to complete the comeback and overall win for the Sun Devils.

“I think that this is an amazing statement about college golf in the state of Arizona,” said ASU head coach Matt Thurmond on Monday. “Two teams that I think will be playing in match play in a few months at the NCAA Championship. Both really, really good teams dukin’ it out. Everybody played so hard and it took our very best Arizona at the end.”

“What an exciting match,” mentioned Brady Wilson, general manager at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. “It’s almost a shame there has to be a winner or loser but I want to thank both The University of Arizona and head coach Jim Anderson as well and Arizona State’s men’s golf team and Matt Thurmond. I really want to commend you guys and your leadership in making this happen. I think it’s been an inspiration for us all and it’s really, really good for college golf.”
