David Habill Okach

Golf Operations Supervisor, The Track, Meydan Golf, Dubai

David Habill OkachQ: When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up and please explain if there was a story around that.

A: When I was growing up I wanted to be a footballer. This was partly due to my uncle who used to play football and always encouraging me to take up the sport.

Q: What is one or two interesting facts about your heritage that you would like to share with us?

A: Some of our heritage emphasizes on family values, humility and being hospitable and caring.

Q: Who got you into the business or game of golf and what was your first experience at a golf course/range?

A: My first experience in golf was when my friends and I visited a driving range in a local

golf course and we decided to have a go.  I did not take it seriously; however, that quickly changed when I moved to Dubai and I was given the opportunity by Philip Henderson to work at The Track Meydan Golf as part of the pre-opening team.

Q: Was there a mentor that helped guide you along your current career path and was there a piece of advice that helped you along your way?

A: I’ve had the good fortune to work with some outstanding Troon Leaders, like Tom Rourke, Paul Dennis, Lloyd Walton, Stephen Payne just to name a few. They have guided, inspired, and allowed me to develop during my career. There has been a lot of pieces of advice that I have received over the years, but one that always stands out is “Be part of the solution not part of the problem.”

Q: How long have you worked for Troon and what has been your career progression; what do you love most about your job?

A: I have worked for Troon just over 10 years now. I started out as Guest Service Associate and then I was promoted to Outside Service Supervisor. Later I was promoted to my current role as Golf Operations Supervisor. What I love about the job is I get to meet new people from all corners of the world with different cultures and background.

Q: What do you do in your daily job or life to inspire other minorities to get them interested in the game of golf or into the golf business as a career?

A: I lead from the front and never shy away from challenges; I believe this inspires fellow associates who I work alongside to do what they do to the best of their abilities

Q: What is your dream foursome for golf (you and three others) or for lunch (if you don’t golf)?

A: Me, Gary Player, Tiger Woods and Seve Ballesteros
