SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Troon Golf,® the world’s leading luxury brand golf management, marketing, and development company, gets the checkered flag as a sponsor of the Star Mazda Formula Race Series. Thanks to the talent and commitment of 23-year old racing standout Bryan Selby, who drove one of three Troon Golf Formula Mazda’s to first place in the Star Mazda Pro Series and was honored as the 2000 “Rookie of the Year.”

“Shifting focus from the golf course to the speedway was a big jump for us,” said Troon Golf Chairman and CEO, Dana Garmany. “But, Bryan’s outstanding performance in our rookie year in the Star Mazda Series exemplifies the level of excellence and excitement we strive for to provide the “Troon Golf Experience.”

A go-cart and auto racer since age 16, and currently pursuing degrees in engineering and business, Selby roared back from a three-year hiatus from racing in his first season as a Formula Mazda driver. His 14 races this season throughout the U.S. and Canada yielded three victories and nine top-5 finishes. Selby’s final victory on October 28th at the Best Western Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada, gave him enough points in the total standings to earn the 2000 “Star Mazda Pro Series Championship.” Series organizers capped his debut on the circuit by naming him “Rookie of the Year.”

“I owe special thanks to Troon Golf and Team Bucknum Racing who put together a first-class team,” said Selby. “Our success wouldn’t have been possible without the tremendous support from Troon Golf. The objective of Formula Mazda is to develop American racing talent. By Troon Golf recognizing the marketing potential of the Star Mazda Series, I was given the opportunity to fulfill my dreams of winning this championship.”

Encouraged by racing privateer Scott Kusy, a Scottsdale resident and long-time business associate of the renowned golf management company, “Troon Golf Racing” sponsors three Formula Mazda cars driven by Selby, Kusy and Mike Potehken. Troon Golf joins a diverse group of American businesses that are banking on greater brand awareness through the increasing popularity, exceptional demographics, and overall excitement of the auto-racing environment.

“The Star Mazda Series is a remarkable program that clearly strikes a chord with our interest in more non-conventional marketing strategies,” said Garmany. “The overall demographics of the racing industry are representative of our clients and customers, and easily justify our sponsorship of the Troon Golf Racing team.”

The Formula Mazda’s are a purpose built racing car similar in construction to a traditional Indy car. However, they utilize less expensive technology and more reliable, but lesser horsepower engines. The cars are engineered for consistent performance at speeds up to 160 mph. The rotary engines are certified to produce the same prescribed power in each of the 200-plus Formula Mazda’s and sealed to prevent tampering.

The Star Mazda Series is the largest spec formula series in the United States, with races at Professional SportsCar, Indy Racing League, NASCAR, and SCCA ProRacing in national and regional events across the country. Star Mazda has launched the careers of many up-and-coming Atlantic and Indy Lights drivers since its inception, and stages outstanding racing competitions.
