Originally designed by golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. in 1971, the Makai Course has long been considered one of Hawaii’s premier championship layouts. It has appeared on several Top 100 lists and is ranked by Golf Digest as one of Hawaii’s best courses. Makai’s distinct layout strategically winds its way around serene lakes and native woodlands, while capitalizing on spectacular coastline views. The renovation project, which began during the fall of 2008, was implemented in conjunction with the renovation of The Princeville Hotel, which reopened as The St. Regis Princeville Resort in October 2009.

“I am extremely proud of the renovation we’ve completed with The Makai Course, which is located in one of the finest destinations in the world,” stated Robert Trent Jones, Jr. “By enhancing the design of the course, we have truly created an unforgettable experience that will encourage golfers to come back and enjoy again and again.”

Naturally, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. led the course enhancement project, which included reconfiguring the strategy of greens complexes. Improvements also include bold reshaping of the bunkers; refurbishment of selected cart paths and comfort stations; and upgrading the practice facility to include two large practice tees, a practice fairway bunker, eight target greens with bunkers, a teaching tee, and short-game practice complex. Plans for a new clubhouse will be implemented in the next phase of the project.

Situated on one of the most beautiful sites in the world, The St. Regis Princeville Resort is Hawaii’s quintessential address. Elegantly appointed, it offers 252 guest rooms, a signature restaurant with world renowned Chef Jean- Georges Vongerichten and the famed St. Regis Butler Service for premiere suites. From this ocean-side retreat, rejuvenate mind and body in the sanctuary of the hotel’s exclusive Halele’a Spa. Overlooking beautiful Hanalei Bay, The St. Regis Princeville Resort offers bespoke service amid magnificent natural surroundings.
