Troon Sips: Winemaker Greg Brewer

2020 WineMaker of the year Greg Brewer

Focus, precision, control. All are elements that not only make a great golfer, but also a great winemaker. After 30 years in the business, all spent in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation of Santa Barbara, Calif., Greg Brewer is one of the most revered winemakers in the world. So much so that he was named “Winemaker of the Year’ as part of Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s 2020 Wine Star Awards. He oversees three vineyards, each with its own distinct product, within the Jackson Family Wines portfolio. Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs are part of his eponymous label, Brewer-Clifton, which he created with original partner Steve Clifton in 1996; Diatom began in 2005 and focuses on a pure expression of Chardonnay; and Ex Post Facto in 2016.

The latter is dedicated to cold-climate Syrah, a varietal Brewer had a deep connection with going back to his early days of winemaking. “Each specific winery strives to harness our appellations with the utmost transparency in their own unique style,” said Brewer. “This objective is to offer the most relevant voice of our estates. While the three labels are corralled by my name, their outcome is ultimately the result of our entire team whose devotion to every step of the process informs, motivates, and inspires.” Savor a glass of Greg Brewer’s wines after your next round at a Troon club or course!
