Simon Zach Wins Gobbler Amateur at Sewailo Golf Club

Simon Zach of the University of Louisville recently won the 2017 Gobbler Amateur at Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson by one shot over Tianlang Guan of the University of Arizona and by two shots over Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake, Idaho. Zach shot a final round one-under par 70 to finish at 4-under par (209) for the tournament. Zach has been on quite a roll as this is his second consecutive victory having won the UH-Warrior Princeville Invitational at Princeville Makai Golf Club in Hawaii in late October.

The Gobbler Amateur, played November 19 – 22, is part of the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series. The multi-stage series provides high-level amateurs, college players, juniors and Troon-facility club champions a chance to compete throughout the year. The Sizzler, the first event of the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series, was held June 10-13 at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. and was won by Yash Majmudar of the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The next event on the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series will be The Agave at Shadow Hills Golf Club in Indio, Calif. December 19-22. The Troon Saguaro Amateur Series will be capped off at the season-ending Saguaro Amateur at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. January 1-4, 2018.

The concept of the Saguaro Amateur and its evolution into a series is the brainchild of University of Colorado Head Men’s Golf Coach Roy Edwards, University of Wyoming Director of Golf Programs Joe Jensen, and Ak-Chin Southern Dunes General Manager Brady Wilson.

“It’s great, you know – back-to-back wins,” said Zach, who hails from the Czech Republic. “I worked hard for it. I had a good end of the fall season, then I finished birdie-eagle and won my first college event (at Makai) changing my point-of-view that I can finish off victories.”
