Steelwood Country Club hosts 2016 Steelwood Collegiate Invitational

Loxley, Alabama (November 9, 2016) - Steelwood Country Club, a private golf and social club managed by Troon, the leader in golf course management, development, and marketing, hosted the inaugural Steelwood Collegiate Invitational October 29 - 30, 2016.

Eleven D-1 schools were represented, totaling 60 collegiate players from the University of South Alabama, University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, Kennesaw State University, University of Kentucky, Lamar University, Rice University, University of Richmond, University of South Florida, University of Southern Mississippi and Western Kentucky Univeristy. Prior to this tournament, Kennesaw State University ranked 31st among collegiate men's golf and the University of Kentucky stood at 42nd.

The two-day tournament featured a stroke play format with 36 holes played on the first day followed by 18 holes on the final round. Steelwood's golf course was in excellent condition and set up to play at par 72 over 7,096 yards. The weather could not have been more favorable for the golfers and spectators.

Kennesaw State was the team champion with a 3-round total of 27 under par. They won by 25 shots over Kentucky. Connor Coffee, from Kennesaw State University, won individual honors with a 12 under par total and Brooks Rabren, from the University of South Alabama, recorded a hole-in-one on the second hole during round 2.

The tournament title sponsor for the event was Advanced Dermatology and Skin Care Centre, owned by Steelwood Country Club member, Dr. Tommy Bender, located in Daphne, Alabama. Twenty additional sponsors supported the College AM/AM held Friday, October 28th.

The tournament raised $20,000 for local charities in Baldwin and Mobile County area. $10,000 was donated to Pilots for Christ, an organization of volunteer pilots and drivers that provide private air and ground transportation for individuals and families in need of transportation for terminally or seriously ill patients to hospitals across the country at no charge. The University of South Alabama was offered $5,000 for a scholarship fund, and the University of Western Kentucky was given $5,000 that will be used for an indoor teaching center at their home club.
