Team Troon On Tour: Cantlay Gets The W At Memorial

By. Kris Strauss

Patrick Cantlay got the “dub” at Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio!

Patrick played near flawless golf on Sunday carding a 64 to garner his first win of the 2019 PGA Tour season. The win at Jack’s place was ironic as Patrick won the Jack Nicklaus award in 2011, the award bestowed upon the top collegiate golfer in America. This marked his first win since winning the Shriner’s in Las Vegas in 2017 (although it seems like as of late Cantlay has been at the top of the leaderboard all spring).

Here are some other interesting facts related to Cantlay’s “dub” at The Memorial:

  • His 8-under 64 is the best ever final round by a winner at the Memorial.
  • His Tournament score of 19-under (269) was the second lowest in tournament history (only Tom Lehman, who shot 268 in 1994 had a lower score).
  • Cantlay joined Tiger Woods as the only former Nicklaus award winner to win Nicklaus’ tournament
  • With the “dub”, Patrick Cantlay qualifies for a return trip to the “refined” Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui for the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions. The other Team Troon player that has qualified is Matt Kuchar (with is win in January at the Sony Open in Hawaii)

There were three other solid finishes by Team Troon players this week:

  • Alex Noren – T41 at -1
  • Gary Woodland – T52 at +1
  • Matt Fitzpatrick – T68 at +5

It is worth noting that 3 of the 6 Team Troon players are in the Top 10 in Fed Ex Points (and 4 of the 6 Team Troon players are in the Top 15):

  • 1 – Matt Kuchar
  • 6 – Patrick Cantlay
  • 9 – Gary Woodland
  • 14 – Justin Thomas
