To The World of Troon,
Team Troon was well represented this week at the World Golf Championships – Workday Championship at The Concession, with four Team Troon members in this elite field…including Matthew Fitzpatrick, Matt Kuchar, Justin Thomas and Gary Woodland. Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Thomas led team Troon with T11 and T15 finishes, respectfully. Fitzpatrick, coming off of his T5 finish at The Genesis, was at the top of the leaderboard on day one and hovered near the top of the leaderboard for the entire event. His play as of late has been strong, and as such, his coverage on air (and that of his all Troon bag) has been great.
Complete Team Troon finishes are as follows:
- T11 Matthew Fitzpatrick: 66 – 69 – 71 – 72 -10
- T14 Justin Thomas: 73 – 66 – 70 – 71 -8
- 43rd Gary Woodland: 71 – 69 – 71 – 78 +1
- T44 Matt Kuchar: 73 – 72 – 69 – 76 +2
PGA CHAMPIONS TOUR
Colin Montgomerie and his “All Troon bag” was in the field in Tucson, Arizona for the Cologuard Classic. Colin would finish at -1 for the tournament earning him a T33 finish in a really strong field that included the likes of Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and more. While in Arizona, Colin was kind enough to spend some time with us to lay down a podcast with us for the next episode of The Turn. Tune in later this week to give that a listen to hear from Colin about his best round, the best round he ever witnessed (hint it was by a player who wears red on Sunday), his golf course design philosophy and more.
- T33 Colin Montgomerie: 73 – 73- 72 -1
Coming Up This Week
The PGA TOUR stays in Florida and slides over to Orlando for the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Two Team Troon members will be in the field. Look for Matt Fitzpatrick to continue his stellar play at a course that apparently fits his game quite nicely (he finished in 2nd place in the 2019 version of the event and last year finished T9). Team Troon members in the field include:
- Matthew Fitzpatrick
- Alex Noren
Cheyenne Woods and her All Troon bag will be on the LPGA Tour this week for the LPGA Drive On Championship presented by Volvik at Golden Ocala in Florida (March 4-7). Go low this week Cheyenne! The World of Troon will be pulling for you!
Matt Fitzpatrick’s hot start in the WGC Workday and his opening round of 66 earned him a share of the lead and lots of coverage of him and his all Troon bag….like this story from The Global Herald – CLICK HERE, this one on MSN.com CLICK HERE and more.
While not Team Troon specific per say, congratulations is in order to the BallenIsles Country Club team and membership on a great event yesterday. BallenIsles commemorated the 50th anniversary of Jack Nicklaus’ victory at the 1971 PGA Championship held at BallenIsles (then known as PGA National). Jack & Barbara Nicklaus attended an socially-distanced ceremony near the 18th green of the East Course (site of the victory). Jack Nicklaus was there, as was Barbara (on her birthday) along with the PGA Championship trophy, the Wanamaker Trophy. Congrats again to all on a commemorating an amazing milestone.
A quote from Mr. Nicklaus:
“It was a unique double then. Still is today. It was nice to spend part of Barbara‘s birthday today with the members at BallenIsles, where I won the 1971 PGA Championship and celebrated Barbara’s birthday on this very day 50 years ago! Happy Birthday, Barbara!”
