Team Troon on Tour: Two Top 5’s at Northern Trust, Montgomerie Strong at Boeing Classic

PGA TOUR

Due to the storm that hit the northeast this weekend, the normal Sunday finish of the PGATOUR’s Northern Trust finished yesterday. Team Troon was well represented in the first event of the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs and we had even had TWO Team Troon members finish within the top five! Alex Noren and Justin Thomas would both finish T4 at -15, just five shots shy of eventual winner Tony Finau. Noren would get there by virtue of a blistering final round 66. His T4 finished moved him up from “outside of the Top 70” (the Top 70 advance to this week’s BMW Championship) to 43 in Fed Ex Cup rankings…securing his spot this week in the next playoff event. Justin Thomas’ strong finish this week provided the “proverbial explanation point” to his current 5th Fed Ex Cup ranking. This provides him with solid momentum going into the next playoff event. Gary Woodland would make it into weekend play and would finish T74, putting him just outside of advancing to the next event. Regardless a solid event for all…and one I am sure the players are thankful to get all four rounds completed. Complete Team Troon results follow:

  • T4 Alex Noren: 69-64-70-66: -15
  • T4 Justin Thomas: 63-69-67-70: -15
  • T74 Gary Woodland: 71-70-68-77: +2

While not part of Team Troon per say, congrats to Tony Finau on getting his second PGA TOUR victory. Finau has a lot of ties to the Troon: prior to relocating to Scottsdale, he played a lot of golf at Troon-managed Alpine Country Club and Thanksgiving Point, both in the Salt Lake area of Utah. He has familial ties to Whirlwind Golf Club GM Louie Unga (a locale where he, Team Troon member Cheyenne Woods and Paul Casey did a cool Nike “Day in the Desert” event in December of 2019), and has a number of “island ties” and connect to Hawaii as his wife is from Oahu, Hawaii. Congrats Tony and we look forward to seeing you back in Hawaii at Kapalua for the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Colin Montgomerie and his all Troon bag got plenty of television time on Golf Channel this past weekend. Colin was in the hunt throughout the entirety of the Boeing Classic held at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge in Snoqualmie, Washington. At one point on Sunday, Colin would be just two shy of the lead with many of is highlights were making their way to the broadcast and via  @PGATourChampions Instagram highlights (more on that in “Shareable” below). He ultimately would finish -7 for a solid 11th place finish, five back of eventual winner Rod Pampling.

  • T11 Colin Montgomerie: 68-67-74: -7
