On World Tourism Day, we’re spotlighting some Troon golf destinations that are redefining the golf experience at their respective clubs; putting people and the planet first by engaging in environmental education and sustainable activities with visitors, golfers and guests.

Coral Restoration at Velaa Private Island

Velaa Private Island in the Noonu Atoll in the Maldives is probably one of Troon’s most exotic destinations. Surrounded by water, the team have been part of an exciting Coral Restoration project for many years now and the results are clear for all to see. The largest project of its kind in the Maldives, some 4,200 nursery-grown corals have been transplanted into the waters around this unique 9-hole golf destination.

The Grove in the UK has collected several awards in 2022 for their outstanding achievements being named Environmental Golf Course of the Year at the Golf Environment Awards 2022, a hefty accolade to receive and achieve their GEO certified status. And now they are hosting the ‘Driving the Green’ Golf Day on 6th October, in association with the ECO Group. Intended to be a great day of golf on the fantastic GEO Certificated golf course, there will also be an opportunity to discuss the way forward for sustainable business ethos.

Pictures often say more than words, and one look at The Bay Clubhouse at Costa Navarino makes quite a statement. It not only looks cool; it helps cool itself. The design of The Bay Clubhouse, which opened in 2019, covers more than 2,000 square meters and is based on the principles of bioclimatic architecture. It features a total of 27,500 plants and trees, both around the clubhouse and on its rooftop, that create a unique microclimate which contributes to the optimization of air quality and cooling of the building. In addition, the use of latest technology materials and monitoring systems maximizes the building’s energy efficiency.

From the outset, PGA National Czech Republic at Oaks Prague has had sustainability at the forefront of their minds. As part of the GEO’s Oncourse program for sustainability, PGA National Czech Republic has looked for ways to increase biodiversity, promote sustainable turfgrass, prevent pollution, reduce energy consumption and recycle all materials. As land managers of 104 hectares, the team has embraced their responsibility when it comes to environmental care. In 2020 944 trees were planted, 99% of golf rounds were walked, 100% of irrigation water was captured from the on-course drainage system filtering rainwater, 100% of plastic was recycled and 229T of grass clippings were sent to compost.
