BAYLANDS GOLF LINKS SUPERINTENDENT WINS EXCELLENCE IN TURFGRASS AWARD

Baylands Golf Club

Scottsdale, Ariz. (December 17, 2021) – Baylands Golf Links Superintendent Steven Hoying was recently awarded the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America Northern California Chapter (GCSANC) 2021 Excellence in Turfgrass Award for Public Courses. Hoying was presented the award by GCSANC Executive Director Marc Connerly at the GCSANC’s annual meeting at The Lodge at Pebble Beach on November 15th.

Hoying has been the superintendent at Baylands Golf Links in Palo Alto, Calif. since April 2018, shortly before the course reopened from a nearly two-year renovation under the direction of golf course architect Forrest Richardson. Since the nearly $12 million renovation and under Hoying’s guidance, agronomic conditions have been spectacular, while large natural areas planted with wetlands plant species have improved habitats for birds and wildlife.

“Considering all the great superintendents and golf courses in the area, I was humbled to be recognized by my peers,” said Hoying. “Receiving this award at Pebble Beach made it all the more special.”

GCSANC presents awards annually to its members in recognition of their exceptional service and accomplishments on behalf of the association. The Excellence in Turfgrass management award is presented to a superintendent member who maintains his/her facility to a standard that reflects consistent, high quality playing conditions, while displaying exceptional agronomic and management skills. The resourcefulness of this individual is an important consideration in the selection criteria and may include factors such as, budget, site restrictions, rounds of golf, staff size, weather, etc.

“Steve is well deserving of this award as he manages his personnel and resources very well,” said Baylands Golf Links General Manager David Hall, PGA. “Baylands Golf Links is recognized as having excellent playing conditions, especially our greens – this is a testament to Steve’s superior abilities.”

Richardson completed the redesign and reconfiguration in 2018 of the original William F. Bell design known as Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course, which opened in 1956. Founded in the mid 1950’s, the municipal course is owned by the City of Palo Alto as part of its Baylands Nature Preserve District, adjacent to the coastal land bordering Palo Alto along the San Francisco Bay. The San Fransisquito Creek, a historic waterway, runs along the course and is a major flood conveyance stream.
