Team Troon on Tour: Alex Noren w/ Top 10 & Matt Kuchar w/ Top 20 finish at Northern Trust

The Team Troon was well represented at first event of the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs: The Northern Trust, held at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts. As shared in last week’s Team Troon on Tour post, only players ranked within the top 125 are eligible for the playoffs and Team Troon had all of our PGA TOUR professionals included. Three Team Troon members played especially well in this first playoff event: Alex Noren, Matt Kuchar and Justin Thomas. While no one in the field was going to catch the eventual winner in Dustin Johnson, Team Troon represented well with Alex Noren posting some sizzling scores on the weekend (including a third round 64 on Saturday) to finish within the Top 10 (T8) and climb up the Fed Ex points ranking (from 78 to 47 – more on that later). Matt Kuchar had another Top 20 finish and Justin Thomas finished within the top 50 of this “first stage” of the playoffs:

  • T8 Alex Noren, -15
  • T18 Matt Kuchar, -12
  • T49 Justin Thomas, -7

 Coming Up Next Week

PGA TOUR
The top 70 players  advance to the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields outside Chicago this week. Due to high Fed Ex Cup points ranking, Team Troon members will once again be well represented with all six qualifying for this second stage of the playoffs. Justin Thomas is the defending champion of the event. One that he captured with a total score of (-25), edging another Team Troon member in Patrick Cantlay (-22). So this event bodes well for Team Troon. Team Troon players in the field of 70 include the following (with their current Fed Ex Cup point ranking detailed):

  • Justin Thomas – 2
  • Patrick Cantlay – 37
  • Gary Woodland – 39
  • Alex Noren – 47 (up from 78 due to his T8 finish at the Northern Trust)
  • Matt Kuchar – 55 (up from 63)
  • Matt Fitzpatrick – 60

PGA TOUR – Champions

While “Lefty” has the tournament buzz this week due to his PGATOUR Champions Tour debut, the World of Troon will be pulling for Colin Montgomerie at the Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National. Coming off of his T3 finish at Firestone for the Senior Players, Colin is in solid form and will be vying for the title this week. Fun fact about this tournament: it has already started! The event is 54 holes and is being played Monday August 24- Wednesday August 26. This was the second of two events held back to back in the region (two  54-hole tournaments played over a nine-day period, with a combined total of $3 million in purses – both broadcast on GOLF Channel). Go Colin!

The LPGA Tour returns from Scotland, back to the U.S.A for the 2020 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in Rogers, Arkansas… Cheyenne Woods will be rocking her all Troon bag at this next stop on the LPGA Tour. Go Cheyenne! The World of Troon will be pulling for you to keep the momentum of sound play rolling on the LPGA Tour.

Speaking of LPGA Tour, while not Team Troon specific, we would be remiss if we didn’t congratulate Sophia Popov who captured her first win (and a major at that) in the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Troon. Prior to the restart of the LPGA, Sophia (who did not have status on the LPGA Tour) was playing on the Cactus Tour and Symetra Tour. In the months leading up to her recent life changing victory, she won the Cactus Tour Event at Troon North Golf Club (one that had Cheyenne finishing in T3 position) and then the week prior to departing for Scotland nearly won the Founders Tribute Symetra Tour event at Longbow Golf Club (where she finished in 2nd). Props to the teams at Troon North Golf Club and Longbow Golf Club for hosting these events that truly do showcase future LPGA stars.
