Team Troon On Tour: Thomas with a Top 5 at WM Phoenix Open

Team Troon - Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland, Yealimi Noh, Matt Kuchar, Alex Noren, Bubba Watson, Cheyenne Woods & Colin Montgomerie

PGA TOUR – WM Phoenix Open

NFL players on the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles weren’t the only ones colliding. Two major events collided in Arizona with the Super Bowl (congrats to all of the KC fans out there) and the most well attended golf tournament in the world in the WM Phoenix Open. Both events had their share of excitement, drama and fireworks. This year WM Phoenix Open was the second designated event of 2023 (the first one being the Sentry TOC at Kapalua), creating a strong purse and strong field. Within that strong field included five Team Troon members. Low Team Troon member was Justin Thomas with a solid T4 finish at -13 (following a solid final round 65). Matt Fitzpatrick would finish within the Top 30 following his four round -6 finish. Next was Matt Kuchar at T32 and Gary Woodland at T42.

In total, it was great to see FOUR Team Troon members finishing strongly at WM Phoenix Open.  Great playing Team Troon!

  • T4 Justin Thomas:  71-68-67-65=271 / -13
  • T29 Matt Fitzpatrick:  70-71-73-65 = 279 / -6
  • T32 Matt Kuchar: 72-67-71-70 = 280 / -4
  • T42 Gary Woodland: 72-69-75-66 = 282 / -2

Also, not Team Troon per say, but congrats to Michael Hopper PGA Head Professional at Lookout Mountain Golf Club in Phoenix, who qualified for and played in the WM Phoenix Open. Hopper was in the field at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open for the same reason he was in 2015 and ‘19: winning the Southwest PGA Section Championship. Two great pre-tournament stories on him, appeared on PGA.com and on Golf Digest.com

PGA CHAMPIONS TOUR – Trophy Hassan II

The PGA Champions Tour was in Morocco this past week with Colin Montgomerie and his all Troon bag on the first page of the leaderboard throughout the weekend. Colin received a great amount of TV time this weekend and he finished T7, seven back of eventual winner Stephen Ames. Congrats Colin! Great playing!

  • T7 Colin Montgomerie: 71-74-72=217 /  -2

Troon International

Staying in the International theme, we want to wish a belated congrats to three locales within the Troon International that hosted professional events on the same weekend. Congratulations go to the entire teams at Al Hamra Golf Club, Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, and Madinaty Golf Club for hosting three professional events in the same week! Hosting the DP World Tour, Asian Tour, and MENA Tour respectively, showcases what an incredible job our operations and  agronomy teams do. Well done to the teams led by Paul and Dindy (Al Hamra), Saeed and Javier/Gabriel (Royal Greens), and Josh and Will (Madinaty). Al Hamra Golf Club was the host of the DP World Tour’s  Ras Al Khaimah Championship, where Daniel Gavins produced the best double bogey you will see to win the by one stroke. The players enjoyed the resort hotel Waldorf Astoria while some got to experience the world’s longest zip line at Jebel Jais. Click here to read/view a complete event debrief. At Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, The Asian Tour made a stop where Abraham Ancer captured the event to earn top honors. The aforementioned Madinaty Golf Club hosted to back to back Egyptian Swing tournaments on the MENA TOUR, the Asian Tour developmental tour. Congrats to all involved!

COMING UP NEXT WEEK

PGA TOUR – Genesis Invitational

The PGA TOUR slides back over to California for the Genesis at Riviera Country Club. The invitational is headlined by the return of Tiger Woods, boasts 19 of the top 20 ranked players in the world and five Team Troon members. PGA Champions Tour – Chubb Classic

The next PGA Champions Tour event on the schedule is on “Troon Turf” in the Chubb Classic at Tiburón Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. This event marks the third leg of three professional golf events over a four-month stretch where Tiburón hosted the LPGA Tour, PGA TOUR-sanctioned tournament and PGA TOUR Champions respectively. 2023 will mark the Chubb Classic’s 36th anniversary and the third straight year the event will be played at Tiburón. Bernhard Langer is set to defend his 2022 title against many of the game’s biggest names, including Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, and Jerry Kelly as well as World Golf Hall of Fame and Team Troon member Colin Montgomerie.

Go Colin! Go Team Tiburon!

Shareable

This week (2/15 specifically) Netflix drops a new golf centric serious in Full Swing. From the same producers of F1 Drive To Survive, this is an immersive documentary series follows a diverse group of professional golfers — on and off the course — during a relentless season of competition. Two Team Troon members are featured prominently in Justin Thomas and Matt Fitzpatrick, as is Troon investor/supporter in Rory McIlroy. Everyone we have been in contact with, from the production team to officials with the PGA TOUR, have shared with us that there is a lot of “Troon” love in this first season. Think about it… Justin won the PGA Championship last year…Matt captured his first PGA TOUR victory last year in the U.S. Open with his all-Troon bag. We are confident it will be great!  Click here for more information on Full Swing and lets all share and re-share to our respective worlds to “tune in”. If Full Swing is even close to the impact as Drive to Survive did with F1 popularity, this series will be great for golf and golf’s continued popularity!

Have a great week. Go Team Troon! Enjoy the drop of Full Swing Season 1.
